Synopsis

This is the moving story of the Czechoslovakian philosopher, Jan Amos Komensky, better known under the Latin name Comenius (1592-1670), as told by his daughter Elizabeth.

Pastor for a small Christian community, neither Catholic nor Protestant, Comenius spent his life in exile, travelling across Poland, Bohemia and Hungary, founding schools wherever possible. His goal? To teach every boy and girl all they need to know to responsibly exercise their personal and collective freedom. He was convinced that a good education was the opposite of indoctrination and strove to open minds as much as possible.

Three times a widower and a father himself, this Galilee of education, knew better than anyone how to observe and develop the wonderful capabilities of children. The story of Comenius's life is also that of an extraordinary father-daughter relationship. Upon her father's death, alone with her five children, Elizabeth leaves for Prussia and discovers her personal destiny in the sacred art of education.

Jean Bedard is a Canadian philosopher, educator and novelist. He is also the author of a successful biography of Master Eckhart.
