About this Item
Complete four volume set but comprised of two different editions - 1836 3rd edition (I) and 1840 4th editions (II, III, IV). Hardcovers. Contemporary full brown leather (dark brown leather to Volume I with lighter brown calf to Volumes II, III, and IV); scuffing and stains with wear to edges; spines and at least one board have handwritten ink names of varying legibility. Foxing/toning throughout all four volumes with some creased corners and soiling. Bindings remain firm. ***** VOLUME I. New-York: Printed for the Author. E.B. Clayton, James Van Norden, Printers, 1836. Third edition (as stated upon title page). H 23.25cm x L 14.75cm. i-xv, [1], 1-558 pages. Antiquarian ink signatures "Murphy" and "Pierce" on spine. Missing preliminary and rear blanks (i.e. title page opposite fp and page 558 opposite rp); pencil signature "J.H. Pierce" on title page with other pencil writing and scribbling on several initial pages; pencil writing on last two pages; some moisture stains. Signatures are likely those of Columbus and Macon, Mississippi attorney and judge Jacob Hume Pierce (1803-1894) and perhaps Columbus attorney Andrew A. Murphy (1817-1848). ***** VOLUME II. New-York: Printed for the Author. E.B. Clayton, Printer, Tontine Buildings, Wall-Street, 1840. Fourth edition (as stated upon title page). H 22.25cm x L 14.25cm. i-xliv, 1-646 pages (printer's errors with multiple page numbers skipped or duplicated but all text appears to be correctly consecutive). H 22.25cm x L 14.25cm. Pencil signatures "B. Matthews" on front free endpaper; a few pencil margin marks amongst text; pages 442-448 creased/curled at their fore-edge margins. Two rear leaves slightly pulled. Signatures could be either Confederate Army veteran Col. Beverly Matthews (1819-1882) or possibly his son Beverly Matthews (1856-1932) but, upon cursory online research, neither seems to have had a legal career. ***** VOLUME III. New-York: Printed for the Author. E.B. Clayton, Printer, Tontine Buildings, Wall-Street, 1840. Fourth edition (as stated upon title page). H 22.25cm x L 14.25cm. i-xxxv, [1], 1-514 pages. Six-line undated ink inscription "Presented to | T.A. Teasdale | by Harrison M? | Columbus | Misp" on front free endpaper. Thomas A. Teasdale (1838-1923) career details elude cursory research but his father, Rev. Thomas C. Teasdale (1808-1891), was a nationally known preacher in the mid-1800s and served as pastor of Columbus' First Baptist Church from 1858-1863 and is forever memorialized by an evocative funerary statue of a weeping angel at Columbus' Friendship Cemetery. ***** VOLUME IV. New-York: Printed for the Author. E.B. Clayton, Printer, Tontine Buildings, Wall-Street, 1840. Fourth edition (as stated upon title page). H 22.75cm x L 14.75cm. i-xxxiv, [2], [1], 1-305, [305], 306-583 pages. Pencil signature "R. Matthews"[?] on ffep; one leaf (paged as 305 on recto and verso) creased at top corner. ****** Acquired among a collection of nineteenth century law books gathered over years by a 20th century Columbus, Mississippi attorney from various descendants of the picturesque southern city's preeminent antebellum bar.
