Debut work by novelist & social activist Mary Therese McCarthy (1912- 1989) loosely combining 6 narratives first published in periodicals. Adventures of Margaret Sargent, or "Meg" --- a college graduate living in New York City in the 1930s. A young woman whose early marriage ends in divorce (her choice, disappointing both husband & illicit lover) --- an editorial assistant for a politically liberal magazine while mingling w/prestigious literary personages of the time (some of the characters are thinly veiled actual acquaintanceships with well-known intellectuals such as Edmund Wilson and Philip Rahv).
