The Turkey Vulture is one of the most recognizable scavenging birds of the Americas, known for its broad wings, soaring flight, dark plumage, and bare reddish head. Scientists learned that its scientific name is Cathartes aura, a name often associated with purification or cleansing because of the bird’s role in removing dead animal matter from the environment. Researchers documented its range, breeding behavior, feeding ecology, migration patterns, and sensory abilities. One of the most important discoveries was its exceptional sense of smell, a rare ability among birds and one of the main reasons it can locate hidden carcasses beneath forest cover or vegetation. Today, the Turkey Vulture is recognized as one of nature’s most efficient cleanup specialists and one of the most successful soaring birds in the Western Hemisphere.
