Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Red cloth with dark red spines and gold lettering and decoration; in cardboard slipcase. 147 x 232 x 78mm. Slipcase a little scuffed around edges, particularly on the bottom; two of the books have faint marks on front boards, in one case clearly caused by a cup or mug; apart from these fairly minor faults, however, all three volumes appear unused and as new. Red cloth and boards with gilt lettering. This dictionary is based upon the Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology (1966), compiled by C. T. Onions with the assistance of G. W. S. Friedrichsen who first produced a draft for a concise version of that dictionary, and the present editor took over the work in 1977. In general, the book remains faithful to Dr. Friedrichsen's plan, although a good many changes of detail and of a broader kind have been made, for which the present editor is alone accountable. The intention is that each entry should give a concise statement of the route by which its headword entered the English language, together with, where appropriate, a brief account of its development in English. 552 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
