Foster was very active as a book and magazine illustrator in his youth, but matured into a successful American impressionist painter and muralist. This later issue was assigned the position of #12 in the Craig Kennedy fantastic detective series, but these aren't Craig Kennedy tales at all. These are the adventures of a woman detective with the same fantastic touches as for Craig's adventures (as in "The Clairvoyants"). "The Dope Fiend" is an influential story that set the "standard" for sensationalist depiction of drug addicts for decades to come. Constance is personally a reformed thief with many friends remaining in the crime world, a surprisingly dark vision of a woman detective.
