- Book 1 of 1: FAITH, FAMILY, AND THE MUSLIM MIGRATION JOURNEY
Migration is often told as a story of departure and arrival: one country left behind, another entered, a new job begun, a new home made. But for families, the real journey is only beginning.
The Country We Left, the Home We Made is a collection of fifteen deeply human stories about migration, family, faith, belonging, and what one generation passes on to the next.
Moving between Bangladesh and Britain, these stories enter the ordinary spaces where migration quietly reshapes life: a husband wondering whether the future abroad is worth what his family must leave behind; children learning to know a father through a screen; a mother discovering how much of “home” once depended on relatives, neighbours, and people who were simply there; a marriage forced to renegotiate respect, responsibility, work, privacy, and family expectations in a new country.
Other stories turn toward the questions children carry into the next generation. What happens when a child’s name becomes something others find difficult to pronounce? How should parents respond when a son begins asking difficult questions about faith? What does it mean to preserve religious identity without replacing love with fear? Why are sons and daughters sometimes given different freedoms? And how should family, culture, and faith respond when the next generation begins making choices of its own?
The collection also looks back across the distance migration creates. Ageing parents remain thousands of miles away. Siblings carry unequal burdens of care. Returning to Bangladesh may feel like “going home” to a parent but like migration to a child raised elsewhere. And eventually every family must confront a larger question: What do we actually want the next generation to inherit from us?
Not simply property, success, or sacrifice—but habits, memories, relationships, beliefs, unfinished conflicts, and ways of treating one another.
Neither a celebration of migration nor an argument against it, The Country We Left, the Home We Made explores both opportunity and cost: the futures families build, the relationships distance changes, the communities they create, the faith they try to carry with integrity, and the new language of home they develop between generations.
For readers interested in Muslim family life, migration, diaspora identity, marriage, parenting, belonging, and the emotional realities of building a life between countries, these stories ask a simple but enduring question:
When we build a new home, what should we carry with us—and what should we learn to leave behind?

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book.
