Original green cloth with blind tooling. Boards detached; spine faded with gilt lettering present and minor chipping. Front endpapers and frontispiece detached but present. Title page soiled and water-stained; occasional water staining throughout. Rough-cut edges. 353pp plus advertisement leaf. Fair condition. - Association copy with exceptional manuscript material. Loosely inserted is an original handwritten ink note on period paper by Harold Locke, author and the first official biographer of Arthur Conan Doyle. The note provides contemporary bibliographical commentary on the first issue of the work, referencing the original fourteen illustrations by George Cruickshank and noting the omission of five plates from later editions for economic reasons. The manuscript is identified beneath in a second hand as ?Harold Locke?s writing.? - With bookplate and signed ownership inscription on the title page of Frederick Barne, MP for Dunwich, dated April 11th, 1858.
