The author was a captain in the Royal Navy. He describes travel from China to Japan, Japanese scenery in Nagasaki, the Dutch establishment in Japan, a visit by the governor of Nagasaki, an earthquake at Simoda, and a visit to Yedo, as well as the customs and attitudes of the Japanese toward westerners. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Second edition, 8vo, a fine copy in original gilt-lettered green cloth; pp. vi+210+16 (publisher's catalogue). Printed from the sheets of the first edition with a newly issued title-page and Contents leaf. Osborn was active during the First Opium War and aboard HMS 'Furious', the first steam vessel in Chinese waters, commanding the naval fleet during in the Second Opium War. He proved his ship's worth by sailing 600 mile of the Yangtze to Hankow. Following the signing of the Treaty of Tientsin in 1858 he and 'Furious' conveyed Lord Elgin from Tientsin and Shanghai to Japan on a trade mission. The Treaty signed between Britain and Japan granted privileges to land at Yedo [Tokyo Bay] and established trading rights. With preliminary comments on the Opium Wars, Shanghai, and the "unhealthy conditions" of the Treaty Ports, and with detailed chapters on Deshima, Nagasaki and Yedo.
