PreSchool--A collection of 57 traditional nursery rhymes. Each double-page spread features a collage border by fab ric artist Margaret Cusack. Four illus trators--John O'Brien, Eldon Doty, Nina Barbaresi, and Giora Carmi--pro vide straightforward, uninspired scenes for each rhyme. Clearly, the book is simply a vehicle for Cusack's art. The rhymes are found in many other edi tions, many featuring inspired illustra tions and more than just the first verse. The book offers historical notes on only nine of the rhymes and includes ver sions of two prayers--"Matthew, Mark, Luke and John" and "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep." The typeface is generally clean, although the score for "Oranges and Lemons" is unac countably fuzzy. Show Mother Goose the honor she deserves and stay with the craftspeople who have handled her rhymes well: Marguerite deAngeli, the Opies, James Marshall, Wallace Tripp, and more.
