California: A History

Since the first edition of Andrew Rolle's classic text appeared in 1963, this comprehensive and well-balanced history of the nation's most populous, productive, and ethnically diverse state has enjoyed a well-deserved popularity.

Building on that success in the fifth edition of California, A History Professor Rolle presents an engaging, colorful, yet unflinching account. Skillfully honed to render an even more direct narrative, this thoughtfully conceived and boldly written new edition includes expanded coverage of such topics as women, ethnic unrest, crime, sports, transportation, and the daunting environmental realities Californians face as they enter the twenty-first century. Includes maps and illustrations.

Andrew F. Rolle has written four books on various aspects of California history and is the editor of The Road to Virginia City: The Diary of lames Knox Polk Miller (Norman, 1960). He is currently professor of history in Occidental College, Los Angeles.
