It was expressly designed for use by trainees enrolled in the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Training Course. Expanded chapter materials correspond to relevant knowledge domains as designated by POST are arranged accordingly. A major function of the book is to give trainees the opportunity to prepare for their classes in advance and to prepare for examinations through home study, and it is written in non-technical language.

Included are questions for self-examination at the end of each chapter, an answer key to the questions at the end of the book, a glossary of terms, and an index.
