Synopsis

This is the story of the first 45 years of the life of one of the last century's foremost botanical artists, told by the artist herself, Barbara Everard.
Born in 1910 of a wealthy Sussex farming dynasty, whose roots were well established there over 400 years ago, the Beards fell on hard times during the first World war. Barbara learned her craft in London during the slump of the 1920's, renovating and faking furniture and Chinese wallpapers. Later she married and went to join her husband, Ray, in Singapore before having to leave in 1942 with the capture of the island by the Japanese, who took Ray prisoner. Back in England, with her young son, Martin, she saw out the years before Ray was freed and they returned to Malaya, where, working on the rubber estates, she began to collect and paint orchids. Once again, conflict entered her life with the Malayan Emergency and so the family returned finally to England where Barbara earned respect and awards for her dedication to painting watercolours of plants, both British and from around the world.
This is a fascinating story of perseverance and determination, of skill and artistry, illustrated with many photographs and documents of this period of her life.
