Add to basket599pp. Thick octavo [21.5 cm] Gray tweed cloth over boards. The spine ends and corners of the covers are lightly rubbed, and the text block edges are subtly soiled. There is a gift inscription on the front free endpaper. In the dust jacket designed by Ronni Solbert. The jacket is price-clipped, and has tape repairs backing the small closed and open tears to the edges (one short piece of tape is visible along the bottom edge of the front panel). With a history by Harold U. Ribalow, a critical introduction by Maxwell Geismar, and a personal appreciation by Meyer Levin. Roth's Depression-era novel met with a lukewarm reception when it was originally published in 1934, but enjoyed a critical resurgence beginning with its reprinting in the '60s. The coming-of-age story of a young Jewish immigrant to New York, "Call It Sleep" is now regarded as a modern masterpiece.
