About this Item

In a typed letter (90 words) signed by Jack London in November of 1909, and laid into this copy, the popular novelist responds to a query by a seller of pencils remarking two things: yes he is the author of THE CALL OF THE WILD and why does it seem he owes a few more cents on pencils he thought he had already paid for? In this brief note London displays both the amiability and the forthrightness for which the famous author was already well known. An extraordinary note. See photo. Green cloth with decorative vignettes on front board and spine in white, dark orange, and dark green, gilt lettering on front cover and spine, top edge gilt, decorative end papers of glaciers and a dog sled in light blue, illustrated frontispiece with tissue guard, title page printed with blue decoration of a glacier, illustrators names in header and footer, lettering and head of dog printed in black, 10 full-page illustrations inserted in addition to frontispiece, other illustrations within the text, 2 pages of advertisements in the rear. Book is truly fresh in its original colors. Gilt lettering quite bright. Front hinge has a 2 inch crack. Back hinge has been glued. Dust jacket is 99% complete but has a complete split at the spine with some restoration tape only visible on the verso. Some edge wear. Mylar holds the jacket together well. Comes with a custom made clamshell slip case with gilt titles. See pictures. Bookseller Inventory # 003637
