A useful small-format volume that aims at comprehensiveness. Covering more than 2000 museums and galleries, it encompasses subjects as diverse as technology, theater, tobacco, and toys. It is geographically arranged in one alphabet, with hours, phone number, other information (picnic area, wheelchair access, train station, etc.), and a brief (10-20 line) description of each museum's buildings and collections. Other guides, devoted just to art or just to London, give much more information about museum collections, staff, and publications. But for broad scope and currency, the Cambridge Guide is a useful address-book for the nonspecialist. Its illustrations add little; the indexes were not seen.
