Item description from seller

Since their discovery in eastern Asia, the transplantation of their stock in Europe and later Australia, camellias have never ceased to draw gasps of wonder at the fragile beauty of their subtle colours and radiant blooms. They were found in the Philippines in 1639 by a Moravian Jesuit after whom they were named. During the ensuing centuries, the beauty of the flowers has been developed by successive generations of dedicated horticulturalists in many countries. Now A. G. W. Simpson has drawn on his own experiences, both in England and Australia, to provide gardeners with all the information they need to grow camellias successfully. Not content to restrict himself to these plants alone, the author also discusses related bushes which thrive in similar conditions. To complement the lucid and helpful text, the author has selected some of the finest photographs from his large collection of camellias, and these have been reproduced with meticulous attention to details of colour so that the readers may enjoy the beauty of these blooms even when the live ones have finally fallen. This book is recommended for gardeners and camellia fanciers; an ideal handbook and a beautiful gift. 1978. First edition. A very good copy in a very good d/w.
