8vo., (8 4/8 x 5 2/8 inches). 3 fine folding plates, the same image in three states: one aquatint with original hand-colour, one etched in outline, and one uncoloured aquatint (some light marginal spotting). Original green cloth, decorated in blind, lettered in gilt (some pale stains to lower cover). Provenance: with the pencilled ownership inscription of Charles Miller, Dunse (born 1810), Scottish poet, on the front free endpaper. First published in 1823. "Drawing from simple subjects will be found the easiest and best practical method of inducting ourselves into the art of copying nature; observing a rigid adherence to proportion, which may be considered a primary object in painting, and is a rule so easily obtained, that very little practice will give a facility of representing objects as they appear to the eye".
