About this Item

This mid-19th century copperplate engraved map is indicative of the constantly changing political status of the various components of the British Empire. The title block notes that the region depicted, which itself approximates to the former British Province of Quebec, was formerly known as Upper Canada. In 1841, the provinces of Upper and Lower Canada were combined into the unified Province of Canada. This map shows the western half of this relatively new political entity; between Detroit, Michigan and Lake St. Francis on the Saint Lawrence River. Railroads are highlighted in orange while canals are accented with blue. Inset maps show the city of Toronto (renamed from York in 1834) and the area around Niagara Falls. Published in Philadelphia by Thomas, Cowperthwait, & Company in 1850. Further legislation in 1867 would see the provinces of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick united into the Dominion of Canada.
