One of an unspecified number of copies, numbered on the colophon page (this being No. 122) Slim octavo in white paper-covered boards printed in red and black, over light grey cloth spine. 43 pp. First edition thus, an offprint from the William and Mary Quarterly. A fine, fresh, bright example. In the original glassine dust wrapper, small tear front flap fold. "The Candidates", a slapstick farce, was originally written and produced in 1770 and is one of the eraliest native American comedies; it introduced for the first time on any stage "the Negro" as a comic type. It also presents what is considered to be an accurate assessment of colonial Virginia politics at the time.
