About this Item
Fine condition blue linen cloth boards (Blumenthal design) with a Kent torchbearer image within a gold outline; above the image is a smaller enclosed red rectangular label with gold lettering with a red rectangular spine block housing gold spine lettering. The upper page edges are red. NOTE: This binding style was in use by The Modern Library from 1939-1962. Because the volume does not list the specific date we've conservatively listed the year as 1962, although it could quite possibly be dated earlier than 1962. All pages are in fine unmarked condition. Includes illustrated front and rear endpapers. "The high-spirited mockery of Candide rings laughingly down the ages. Its case against optimism is as strong in the twentieth century as it was on that day in 1759 when Voltaire unlocked the door of the room in which he spent three days composing his Satanic masterpiece. Its shafts of ridicule still fly with undiminished force in all directions, sparing no form of stupidity or complacent rectitude. Candide remains the satire of satires, the gayest nose-thumbing ever directed at the follies and prejudices of mankind.". Seller Inventory # 004071
