The Candy Box (Scroll of the Gargoyle)

“Where magick whispers, heritage answers.”

Haley Harper Price faces a dreadful summer. No eleventh birthday party, developers circling her home, her impossible-to-please mother is more distant than ever, and now, her father is ill.

She’s losing everything she loves.

Then Haley discovers a bejeweled gargoyle in the cellar — and a hidden scroll pointing to a long-buried Romani legacy that may hold the power to save Grudge Hollow, win her mother’s favor — even cure her father. But to find it, Haley must jaunt to Iceland with her brother, Stevo, and her best friend, Lúile, in search of a mysterious crystal candy box.

Danger, delight, and wild imagination await as tricksters trap them, caves sing, and geysers launch them high into magickal realms. And when a vengeful warlock steals the box and retreats to his underground laboratory, their only hope lies with the Throwaways — a band of strange, discarded hybrimorphs who know the warlock’s deadly labyrinth better than anyone.

Perfect for fans of Fablehaven, Nevermoor, and Aru Shah and the End of Time, The Candy Box is a fast-paced middle grade fantasy filled with Nordic folklore, spooky riddles, enchanted objects, unforgettable creatures, family secrets, and heart.

This artfully crafted book features premium cover art, full-page black-and-white plates, an intricate hand-drawn illustration of the realm of CiTioMiTh, and original ornamentation throughout.

A.B. Grant writes fantastical adventures for teens and tweens--books that grab you from the first page and won't let go. Building worlds of magick, heart, and mystery, she creates places where readers can escape, explore, and belong. Fueled by imagination, belly laughs, and possibly ghosts, she's also been known to sing to her houseplants, apologize to spiders before relocating them, and hold whispered negotiations with squirrels who refuse to follow the peanut distribution schedule.

Cover artist Kim Dingwall is an illustrator with over 20 years' experience, specialising in sci-fi and fantasy, beautiful people, and hideous trees. Based in Melbourne, Australia, she's influenced by the land and sky around her, most of all trees (hideous ones) and clouds, which inspire her to reach greater heights by drifting aimlessly.

Charles Utting of Seattle, Washington, illustrated the full-page plates, while Peyton Krause of New Jersey's Pine Barrens created the illustration of CiTioMiTh and the book's decorative elements.
