Capabilities of the Russian Intelligence System: How Russia Integrated Intelligence, Special Forces and Information Warfare in Crimea

This book examines how the Russian intelligence system integrated intelligence services, special forces, and information warfare to achieve strategic objectives during the Crimea crisis. Through a rigorous doctrinal and analytical approach, it explores the coordinated use of non-military instruments of power, hybrid warfare, and information operations within Russian strategic thinking. The study analyzes how intelligence, covert action, and informational influence were combined to shape the operational environment, limit escalation, and secure political outcomes without large-scale conventional combat. Situating the Crimea case within a broader geopolitical and security context, the book engages with contemporary debates on coercion, strategic influence, and conflict below the threshold of open war. It also offers a comparative perspective that contributes to understanding the evolving role of intelligence and information warfare in modern conflicts. This volume is intended for scholars, analysts, and practitioners in intelligence studies, security studies, military studies, and international relations seeking to understand the strategic logic and operational mechanisms behind Russia’s use of integrated power in the twenty-first century.
