Within the Capes is a novel written by Howard Pyle, a renowned American author and illustrator, first published in 1885. The story is set in the late 17th century and follows the adventures of a young Englishman named Lionel Lincoln. Lionel is the son of a wealthy merchant who has recently passed away, leaving him with a large fortune and a desire to explore the world. He sets sail for the American colonies, hoping to find adventure and perhaps a new place to call home.Upon arriving in Virginia, Lionel is immediately drawn into the conflict between the English colonists and the native tribes. He quickly learns that the land he has come to explore is full of danger and intrigue, and he must use all of his wits and courage to survive. Along the way, he meets a cast of colorful characters, including a beautiful young woman named Alice, a fierce Native American warrior named Powhatan, and a mysterious Frenchman named Jean La Chesnaye. As Lionel navigates the treacherous waters of colonial America, he must confront his own prejudices and biases, as well as the injustices and atrocities committed by his fellow Englishmen. He also learns valuable lessons about love, loyalty, and the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of overwhelming odds.Within the Capes is a thrilling adventure story that combines historical accuracy with imaginative storytelling. Pyle's vivid descriptions of colonial life and the natural beauty of Virginia make the setting come alive, while his dynamic characters and fast-paced plot keep readers on the edge of their seats. This book is a must-read for anyone who loves historical fiction or action-packed adventure stories.1901. Pyle is best known for the children's books that he wrote and illustrated. It is from his famous Book of Pirates that our present-day concept of pirates has come. School children still read his Men of Iron, The Story of King Arthur and his Knights, The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, and many other tales. Within the Capes is the story of Captain Tom Granger, a Quaker, and his adventures in 1812. It is a unique blend of Robinson Crusoe, seafaring adventure and Quaker romance. About the Author
Howard Pyle (March 5, 1853 – November 9, 1911) was an American illustrator and author, primarily of books for young people. A native of Wilmington, Delaware, he spent the last year of his life in Florence, Italy. In 1894 he began teaching illustration at the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry (now Drexel University). After 1900, he founded his own school of art and illustration, named the Howard Pyle School of Illustration Art. The scholar Henry C. Pitz later used the term Brandywine School for the illustration artists and Wyeth family artists of the Brandywine region, several of whom had studied with Pyle. Some of his more notable students were N. C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, Elenore Abbott, Ethel Franklin Betts, Anna Whelan Betts, Harvey Dunn, Clyde O. DeLand, Philip R. Goodwin, Thornton Oakley, Violet Oakley, Ellen Bernard Thompson Pyle, Olive Rush, Allen Tupper True, Elizabeth Shippen Green, Arthur E. Becher, William James Aylward, and Jessie Willcox Smith. Pyle's home and studio in Wilmington, where he taught his students, is still standing and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. His 1883 classic publication The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood remains in print, and his other books, frequently with medieval European settings, include a four-volume set on King Arthur. He is also well known for his illustrations of pirates, and is credited with creating what has become the modern stereotype of pirate dress. He published his first novel, Otto of the Silver Hand, in 1888. He also illustrated historical and adventure stories for periodicals such as Harper's Weekly and St. Nicholas Magazine. His novel Men of Iron was adapted as the movie The Black Shield of Falworth (1954). Pyle travelled to Florence, Italy in 1910 to study mural painting. He died there in 1911 of a sudden kidney infection (Bright's Disease).
