A scarce souvenir issue of a bulletin put out by the civic improvement association for the Capitol View neighborhood, "one of the few communities in Washington developed for African Americans by African Americans" ("Memories of Capitol View," planning.dc.gov). Developed in the 1920s by Black businessman John Whitelaw Lewis, Capitol View was a modern suburban neighborhood for upwardly mobile African American families, intended to be a model community. Residents were serious about their civic duties, forming the Capitol View Civic Association to improve and keep up the neighborhood. This issue contains a brief history of the neighborhood, an outline of the duties of committee members, a list of the duties of block leaders, and several illustrations of committee members and events. It also reprints a series of articles and documents related to the neighborhood. No issues of this scarce newsletter found in OCLC. A very good copy with a hint of wear and a few tiny stains to covers.
