About this title

Synopsis

Capmaker to the Czar tells the riveting true story of Solomon Lipshitz – talented and successful capmaker to Czar Nicholas in pre-revolutionary Russia. With rumors of revolution and political tension in the air, Solomon begins to realize his family may be in danger. As conditions worsen, the accounts of “freedom” they hear from friends about a far-off country called the United States become alluring. Finally convinced their lives are truly at risk, they make the fateful decision to abandon their beloved Russian home and all their possessions for a new life in a strange, new world they could not possibly know. Travel with Solomon, his wife Anna, and their children, from their daring escape from their homeland and perilous journey across the sea, to a new life on the streets of early 1900’s New York and beyond. It’s a fascinating story gathered together from family lore and old memories -- a story of a man with faith in his family, who bet it all on an unknown land and a dream that came true.
