The first edition was issued in 1857 with sparse historical and cultural context because of cost. However, It was so popular that the second edition was produced the same year, adding details eliminated. It was also thought that the subject matter would mainly appeal to those in the Western states but word spread and it was decided to publish the third edition in New York. This volume includes the prefaces from both previous editions. It was also noted that 3 new illustrations were added and the ones in previous editions were improved and enlarged.
The Oatman family was attacked while part of a Mormon train en route to California via the Old Santa Fe Route in 1851. Six members of the family were murdered, one of the sons left for dead, and Mary Ann and Olive were hauled away by the Apaches. Mary died while in captivity, and Olive was ransomed in 1856. She was extensively tattooed, and went on tour to describe her experiences and display her decorations.
