The Capture, The Prison Pen, And The Escape: Giving An Account Of Prison Life In The South, Principally At Richmond, Danville, Macon, Savannah, Charleston, Columbia, Millin, Salisbury, And Andersonville: Describing The Arrival Of Prisoners, Plans Of Escape, With Incidents And Anecdotes Of Prison by Willard W. Glazier recounts a Union officer’s Civil War experiences as a prisoner and escapee. The work weaves diary entries, Preface, and chapters describing life in southern prison pens such as Libby, Danville, Macon, Savannah, Charleston, Columbia, Salisbury, and Andersonville. It details daily rations, illness, crowding, discipline, and the brutal treatment endured by prisoners, alongside vivid accounts of escape plots, tunnels, disguises, and perilous flights to Union lines. Interspersed with testimonies from fellow inmates, the narrative contrasts Rebel prisons with some improved Savannah camps and offers reflections on slavery, patriotism, and humanitarian concerns. The book serves to expose atrocities, honor fallen comrades, and advocate justice and humane treatment for prisoners of war.
