Capturing Long Distance Travel

Long distance travel, defined as all movements to a destination at least 100 km from home, while small as a share of total trip making (about 1%) is still one of the most important segments of the travel market due to its economic importance (business travel and holiday travel), as well as its ecological impacts (covering about 20-25% of miles traveled). In spite of this importance the attention given to the problems of measuring and describing this travel has been surprisingly small. The aim of this book is to contribute to this literature by presenting the results of recent research, in particular within the framework of the EU-funded projects Methods for European Surveys of Travel Behaviour (MEST) and Technologies for European Surveys of Travel Behaviour (TEST).
