First thus, the first edition of this work. Published using Poire's pseudonym, Caran d'Ache. His pseudonym is taken from the Russian word 'karandash' meaning 'Pencil'. He was a regular contributor to newspapers such as 'Le Figaro' and many feel he is one of the precursors of comic strips. The Swiss art product company 'Caran D'Ache' is named after him. With an introduction by H M Bateman, who notes this is the first English publication of Poire's works. An important part of the history of cartoons. In the publisher's original boards.
