Card-Sharpers: Their Tricks Exposed, Or the Art of Always Winning (circa 1920)

Paperback copy of this famous treatise on cards. Translated by William J. Hilliar. These Drake editions were published as cheaply as possible and this copy shows it. As you can see the bottom front corners are fragile. Only on the back does the injury extend into the text of the wrap. The binding is sound. The interior has no writing, markings, tears or other issues. The paper is toned and fragile. Paginates: wraps, title page, 189, [1]. No ads. I believe the complete translation was 201 pages but Drake abridged the early issues to save money. This is not rare or valuable but it is a pretty cool bit of ephemera. For the collector. The first publication in English was titled "The Sharper Detected" in 1863, London, Chapman & Hall. The book was translated again in 1881 with the title "Card Sharping Exposed." Finally, this Hilliar translation was published in 1891. More notes: now about the date. Drake began publishing this title around 1902-1903 and that early edition is notable for the copyright date being omitted. This book dates sometime between 1904-1927 which is when Drake was doing business at 1006 Michigan Avenue; the address is seen on the back cover. I am guessing circa 1920 but I don't know.
