The field of neonatal-perinatal medicine and specifically neonatal care continues to change, and clinical applications of studies in many disciplines have dramatically improved the outcome of ill neonates. The past six years have been characterized by refinements in diagnostic and therapeutic techniques as well as new developments. This Third Edition attempts to incorporate many of the newer technological and physiologic advances, and in order to accomplish this, a larger group of contributors and critical commenters has been gathered to put the current state of the art in perspective. This group includes experts in perinatology from throughout North America and Europe. Based on practical experience from the first two editions, we have used the same format, presenting new information in the form of text, case problems, or simply questions with descriptive answers that can be explored using an expanded index. There have also been major revisions in all sections. The objective has remained to provide a sound physiologic basis for perinatal practice. [From the Preface]
