Map. Engraving. Image measures 16" x 9.5". An rare and unusual map of Israel and Palestine or the Holy Land. Depicts the region with divisions of each of the Twelve Tribes of Israel on both sides of the Jordan. These include Asher, Naphtali, Zebulon, Issachar, Manasseh, Ephraim, Benjamin, Juda, Simeon, Ruben, Gad, and Manasseh beyond Jordan. The Biblical cities of Sodom and Gomorrah are noted. Beautifully engraved with mountains and forests rendered pictorially, the map notes several cities, towns, lakes, rivers, etc. Perhaps the most striking are the two insets included in the map. The inset in the top left quadrant depicts an elaborate plan of the Temple of Jerusalem, while the one in the bottom right features a plan if the city of Jerusalem, intricately details. The map is in good condition with minor toning along the original fold lines. Issued by Nicholas Lenglet du Fresnoy in 1735. Nicolas Lenglet Du Fresnoy (1674-1755) was a French scholar, historian, geographer, philosopher, and bibliographer of alchemy. Initially studying theology, he transitioned to diplomacy before dedicating himself to scholarly pursuits. Lenglet edited and published numerous significant works, including the Roman de la Rose and Voltaires La Henriade. He also contributed articles on history and geography to Diderot and D'Alembert's "Encyclopedie." Lenglet published under various pseudonyms and was known for his independence and critical style, which led to multiple imprisonments under Louis XV. He died at 81 after an accidental fall.
