The dative of the gerund and gerundive has been dis cussed elsewhere (a. J. P. 23, 233 and is here men tioned merely as one of the ends toward which an action may be directed. T hough the gerund is a verbal noun and the gerundive a verbal adjective, in both the oh jective point is the activity expressed by the verbal form. Both are associated with nouns, adjectives and verbs, and give us in miniature the dative usage for Livy.
