Cases And Practical Remarks In Surgery, With Sketches Of Machines, Simple In Their Construction, Easy In Their Application, And Of Approved Use — Benjamin Gooch. This eighteenth-century volume collects extensive case histories and practical observations across a broad spectrum of surgical topics. It details skull injuries and trepanation, traumatic brain wounds, hydrocephalus, cancer and various tumors, hernias, lithotomy, and amputation, illustrating decision-making and technique in real clinical scenarios. A notable feature is Gooch’s sketches of surgical machines and devices intended to simplify procedures, stabilize joints, extend limbs, or improve wound care, complemented by plates and diagrams. The Preface discusses the advancement of surgery in Britain, hospital development, and the need for well-equipped hospital libraries and demonstrative teaching for pupils. The Second Edition, published in 1767 with additions and emendations, emphasizes practical utility and the educator’s role in improving patient outcomes. The work stands as a historic blend of clinical narrative and technical innovation, reflecting Gooch’s commitment to surgical education and practice.
