The Cashew Nut Wish

When a child is challenged for being different, the power of their family's love reminds them it is okay to be you-nique.

Cashew nut wish — A wish you can"nut" return.

Read to find out what the wish is and how the child learns to be proud to be you-nique. Adults and children will gain more awareness for Filipino animals, culinary dishes and ancient gods, as well as how we take for granted a can of cashew snacks.

Almost two decades ago, Cherry de la Torre, a Canadian mother of Filipino descent, wrote the first draft of “The Cashew Nut Wish” after Christian, her three-year-old son of Filipino-Caribbean heritage, came home upset after being bullied. A few children his age had refused to play with him because of his big hair. The Legend of the Cashew Nut from the Philippines is incorporated into this original story set in High Park, Toronto. Co-author Christian lends his writer’s voice when as a result of being bullied he makes a wish which his mother dubbed a “cashew nut wish.” Hence this book was born.
