Cat Is Back at Bat (Dutton Easy Reader)

Fourteen rhymed verses describe unusual activities of animals, such as: "A big pig tries a wig" and "A snake tries to bake a cake"

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Fourteen silly rhymed bits about different animals, designed to keep beginning readers smiling as they learn . "A shark hears a bark in the park," is the text on one lefthand page, while an ink and soft watercolor illustration on the facing page shows an anthropomorphized shark walking through the park with a worried look on his face, pursued by a small, angry dog. The detailed, humorously outlandish pictures provide an opportunity for a more complicated conversation than the words provide. --Carolyn Jenks, formerly at Oyster River Elementary School, Durham, NH

On each double spread of this amusing very easy reader, Stadler links three rhyming words in a brief sentence and illustrates the silly results, some of which are funnier than others: ``A goat in a coat sails a boat'' is predictable, but ``A crab tries to grab a cab'' is worth a chuckle when he appears on a city street with a briefcase. Good practice for novices, who may want to make up their own rhymed, comical situations. (Easy reader. 4-8) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
