PREFACE. The Exhibition of Helmets and Mail, which was held in the rooms of the Institute from June 3rd to June 16th, was planned with the object of bringing together as many types as possible, so as to facilitate a comparative study of the helmets of different periods and countries, and the construction of mail armour. Although there were great and inevitable gaps in the series, the exhibition may nevertheless be considered to have been a marked success. The primary intention of these notes is to describe the objects exhibited at the rooms of the Archaeological Institute, and not to write a history of antique or medieval helmets and coats of mail.
