The vast majority of the books on offer here were published in Europe (London, Paris, Amsterdam, Oxford, Brussels, etc.) in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, in all subjects, including history, belles lettres, literature, and the classics. John Penington, a collector-turned-bookseller, focused his inventory on English and French books for his Southern client base (see Brotherhead, Forty Years Among the Old Booksellers of Philadelphia, p.25). Early previous owner's signature on title page. Scarce. Recent neat archival paper tape covering to spine. Generally, a very good copy; some foxing on first two leaves (much milder on a few other pages) and a little chipping to last leaf.
