About the Author
Jim "Chiefy" Mathie retired in 2007 after serving 30 years with Deerfield Beach Fire Rescue. He advanced through the ranks as a Firefighter/Paramedic, Rescue Supervisor, Fire Inspector, Training/EMS Lieutenant, Battalion Chief and retired as a Division Fire Chief. His responsibilities as a Division Chief included Emergency Medical Services and Emergency Management. During his career he obtained an Associates Degree in Fire Science from Broward College, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Administration from Nova Southeastern University and has completed numerous courses toward a Master s Degree in Adult Education from Florida International University. He also spent 25 years as an Adjunct Faculty member for the Emergency Medical Technician and Paramedic program at Broward College. In 2010, he received the Broward County Fire Chiefs Association Life Time Achievement Award. Jim first encountered underwater adventures while instructing a group of dive instructors for the Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) on their private island at Great Stirrup Cay, located in the Berry Islands in the Bahamas. This was an outreach program lasting many years through Broward College and its goal was to have the dive instructors become Emergency Medical Technicians. While Jim shared his emergency medical knowledge, the dive instructors taught him how to freedive and hunt underwater. Gradually, SCUBA was added as he obtained his Open Water, Advanced, Rescue Diver and Nitrox Certifications. These early 1980 trips to the Bahamas led to a lifetime of exploration and created a passion for underwater hunting. After retirement, Jim creating Chiefy, LLC in order to write Catching the BUG, The Comprehensive Guide to Catching the Spiny Lobster and now Catching the Spear-it! The ABC's of Spearfishing. Little did Jim know that some 30 years later, he would be writing about his hunting experiences and publishing them in books. Both Catching the BUG and Spear-it! serve as guides for successful underwater hunting.
