A Catechism of Health for the Use of Schools and Young Persons

A Catechism Of Health For The Use Of Schools And Young Persons by Henry Weekes. Henry Weekes, F.R.C.S., was a late senior surgeon associated with the Thames Hospital in London. This 19th?century instructional manual presents a practical, non?technical guide to health for young readers. Written as a short catechism in a question?and?answer format, the book covers the essentials of staying well: fresh air, adequate light, pure water, and wholesome food; regular meals; sufficient sleep; temperance in drink and tobacco; cleanliness; and clothing suitable to the season. It emphasizes avoiding damp, dark, and crowded living conditions, and explains that prevention is easier than cure. The text includes simple first aid guidance for common accidents and emergencies and urges the formation of good habits and healthy attitudes. While accessible to schoolchildren, it also critiques excessive mental strain and encourages practical application of sanitary knowledge in daily life, avoiding heavy anatomy or physiology detail.
