The Catechism and Holy Scripture

One common pretense levelled by Protestants against Catholics is the latter’s disengagement with the written Word of God and incorporation of extra-biblical elements into their religion. The Church, through her Magisterium, theologians, and Saints, has never ceased to zealously face these false accusations. However, commitment to the written Word of God is incumbent also upon laity and for reasons besides polemics alone. Adapted from the catechism issued by the English Bishops at the end of the 19th century, The Catechism and Holy Scripture illustrates the perennial doctrines of the Church through the Scriptures and is composed with the intention of effecting devotional piety. While the “plenitude of the power committed” to the Catholic Church antedates her establishment of the Biblical canon, Catholics cannot neglect the Scriptures without threatening true adherence and reverence to Divine Revelation. “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ” writes St. Jerome. Presenting Catholic teaching in a question-answer format alongside a host of scriptural passages related to each, Rev. J.B. Bagshawe’s volume is ideal for helping the young learn and love the Catholic Faith.
