Scholars have established the fact that a late Gothic architect, Enrique Egas, laid the foundations fro the cathedral but no previous attempt has been made to determine to what extent Siloe was conditioned by his predecessor or how significantly the present altered state of the cathedral deviates from his own plan. This plan is reconstructed here . This clear definition of Siloe's project leads to the realization that, far from being the stylistic hybrid it has long been considered, the cathedral is an independent and unusually successful Renaissance version of the processional church .
