The Catholic Church Facing Liberalism: The Syllabus of Errors

This book seeks to explore the Syllabus of Errors in its historical, theological, and contemporary dimensions. It aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the document, situating it within the broader context of the Church's confrontation with liberalism. It will examine the intellectual roots of liberalism, the political movements that sought to reshape European society, and the Church's response to these challenges. It will offer a detailed commentary on the propositions condemned in the Syllabus, explaining their meaning, their historical background, and their relevance for today. It will trace the legacy of the Syllabus through the pontificates of Leo XIII, St. Pius X, and the popes of the twentieth century. Finally, it will consider the contemporary relevance of the Syllabus in an age marked by relativism, secularism, and the erosion of Christian culture.
