Carpets from the Caucasian mountain region of the USSR contain simple but varied abstract patterns and warm color harmonies. Gans-Ruedin gathers a representative selection from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, and also includes a group of carpets from before the period of modern production. The main portion of the book consists of 160 spectacular photographs of rugs. The page adjoining each color plate offers information on date, dimensions, knotting, visual description, and a drawing that highlights a particular motif. The format is identical to Gans-Ruedin's Antique Oriental Carpets (Kodansha, 1975), and the book expands on a chapter from that work. While a number of the same rugs are shown, here they are reproduced in full color.
