For the famous, the witty and the beautiful in the theatre of the twenties and thirties, there was one artist above all who won their affection and respect — Nerman. ‘I needn't have trembled’, lvor Novello wrote to Nerman, ‘because your pen was kind — accurate, hinting at one’s absurdities, but always with a smile — never with a leer — and that | think is the secret of your very great success; one looks at your ‘impressions’ and has a sense of security— one feels you are laughing w/th your subjects, not at them’.

In this new tribute to Nerman, Sandy Wilson has selected nearly 100 drawings dating from the beginning of the century up to 1975 when he visited the artist, who now lives in his native Stockholm after a brilliant career which included studying with Matisse. Nerman has lived and worked in London (for The Tatler), Paris, Stockholm, New York and Hollywood (for The New Yorker and the Journal American) and the drawings in the book are taken from all periods and locations, but with an emphasis on the 20's.
