Cell Biological Applications of Confocal Microscopy (Volume 70) (Methods in Cell Biology, Volume 70)

This volume of the acclaimed Methods in Cell Biology series provides specific examples of applications of confocal microscopy to cell biological problems. It is an essential guide for students and scientists in cell biology, neuroscience, and many other areas of biological and biomedical research, as well as research directors and technical staff of microscopy and imaging facilities.

An integrated and up-to-date coverage on the many various techniques and uses of the confocal microscope (CM).

• Includes detailed protocols accessible to new users
• Details how to set up and run a "Confocal Microscope Core Facility"
• Contains over 170 figures

Cell Biological Applications of Confocal Microscopy is a comprehensive introduction to confocal microscopy for cell biologists. It contains integrated and up-to-date coverage on the various techniques and uses of this valuable research tool. Techniques are described completely and methods are made accessible and understandable, enabling the researcher to study and develop a hands-on approach to imaging. Chapters cover a variety of topics ranging from confocal microscope theory to applications for studies in cell biology. Fundamental topics include discussion on the role of coverglass thickness in 3-D imaging, and selecting a suitable pixel size. More advanced topics include the use of the microscope in ratiometric measurements with physiological dyes, the application of fast video rate microscopes, and the two-photon microscope and its advantages over traditional confocal microscopes. Chapters of interest to developmental and molecular biologists describe the properties of imaging species of animals, the Drosophilia embryo, and the single cell organism, Tetrahymena.
