Another medical guide? Yes, but one that is so well prepared and thoughtfully written that it deserves a spot in your consumer health education collection. The Answerbook describes the symptoms, causes, and treatment of 75 common afflictions, including acne, ear infections, varicose veins, chronic fatigue syndrome, and premenstrual syndrome. Entries are arranged in alphabetical order, with an average of five pages per entry. Questions such as "What are my chances of having colon cancer if someone in my family has it?" and "What is the risk of perinatal transmission of HIV?" demonstrate the experience of the editor, who cofounded the Center for Medical Consumers in 1977, has appeared on radio shows, and contributes regularly to the medical column in Family Circle. While not as comprehensive as other publications (e.g., Healthwise Handbook, Healthwise, Inc., 1995), this work has created its own niche through its balanced presentation of the medical literature.
