The Writers Discussion Group of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and their friends tell the story of life on the home front in America, Antigua and England when military support roles were vital to the war effort. A 15 year old girl was an official plane spotter. A 16 year old boy gave up his summer vacations to help grow food for the hungry. A merchant marine cooked. Mothers cared for children, while waiting for the dreaded telegram from the War Department.

The writers share their stories of a time when people, from pre-school age to the oldest grandparents, found a niche in which to serve their country. Challenges On The Home Front, told in a rich personal voice, is a true portrait of a time in history not found in a history book. About the Author

The Writers' Discussion Group of the Chapel Hill Senior Center of Chapel Hill, NC was founded in 1991. Challenges On The Home Front is their third collection. Echoes, their first, was published in 1997; their second, A Generation Speaks, was published in 2000.
