Dealing with the issue of sustainability in a rapidly urbanizing Southeast Asia requires, in the view of the editors (two from Singapore's Nanyang Technological U. and the other from the U. of Western Australia), recognition the intertwining relationship of physical environment, economic-cultural developments, and social-political developments. They have thus structured the 14 papers on urban development and change in the region around these three broad issues. The first set of papers address environmental and infrastructure developments, specifically looking at public use of urban forest and related conservation issues in Singapore, urban water management, urban transport, and other topics. Cultural and economic developments discussed include the university and the global knowledge economy, urban heritage conservation and tourism development, and a case study of Nike as a global production network. Among the social and political topics addressed are population development, ethnicity and the city, moral geographies of squatting in Kuala Lumpur, and urbanization in Burma (Mandalay and Rangoon).
